European Leagues Unite Against FIFA
The top football leagues in England, Spain, Italy, and Germany have united to demand major governance reforms at FIFA. The Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga issued a joint statement targeting the way the world governing body is run. This protest comes at a very important time, as FIFA President Gianni Infantino plans to run for reelection in 2027.
The leagues argue that football is facing a major crisis. In their statement, they explained that the long standing foundations of the sport have been threatened by a fundamental governance problem. They accused the FIFA president of actively promoting exploitative ideas instead of safeguarding the game against them.
The Fight Over Power and Reforms
A key issue in this dispute is the FIFA Forward Enterprise scheme. Although football stakeholders successfully forced the withdrawal of this project, the leagues warn that the conditions that created it still exist. Infantino has acknowledged that some changes are needed, but the leagues insist that simple surface level changes are not enough.
Instead, they are calling for deep constitutional reforms. They want to make sure that individual disciplinary matters are kept completely insulated from political interference. The leagues stated that the future of the sport matters to everyone, and football cannot grow globally if its foundations are undermined.
Demanding Checks and Balances
The joint statement raises serious questions about how much power is concentrated at the top of FIFA. The leagues are asking whether the president should be allowed to hold so much regulatory, commercial, and political power without effective checks and balances. They believe that any major decisions must require the agreement of the affected stakeholders.
This is not the first time FIFA has faced governance issues. More than ten years ago, criminal proceedings involving senior football officials led to a reform process. However, the leagues argue that football has once again suffered one of the biggest abuses of power in the history of the organization. They want real change before the next election cycle.
