The Meeting in Italy
Clubs from the Euroleague met on Lake Como in Italy this week. During this rare gathering, members voted to reject a formal offer from the NBA to create a single NBA Europe operation.
This decision came after the NBA spent more than two years working on plans for the new league. The rejection was not entirely unexpected by observers.
Plans for NBA Europe Continue
Despite the rejection of the merger, plans for NBA Europe are moving forward. The goal is to form a 16-team league that could start as early as the 2027-28 season.
NBA owners discussed the progress during a Board of Governors meeting in New York. One owner described the venture as a 20-year project.
A Divided Situation in Europe
The NBA has received lucrative bids on expansion franchises in cities across Europe. These teams could directly compete with the Euroleague for fans, media rights, and sponsorship dollars.
Meanwhile, a significant number of the 13 permanent Euroleague teams have shown interest in joining NBA Europe. This has created a fractured situation with teams trying to secure their futures, though the coalition currently holds against the NBA recruitment.
Future Negotiations Ahead
The NBA proposal would allow teams to play in their national leagues on weekends and compete in NBA Europe during the week. Rosters would also expand to handle multiple competitions.
European media outlets have described the proposal as a buyout offer. Negotiations between the parties are expected to continue.
