Farewell to Argentina
Inter Miami head coach Cristian Kily González said Argentina will miss Lionel Messi terribly following the captain's international retirement before urging fans to enjoy his time with the MLS club. Speaking on Friday, González described the farewell match as incredibly intense. He mentioned that he was very close to him, but ultimately, that moment belonged to him, and it was his time.
González stated that all that mattered was for him to enjoy it. He told him to soak up all the love from Argentina and the whole world. He added that Messi will be missed in that jersey, but now that they have him, they have to enjoy having him with them.
A competitive drive
González noted that Messi left a lasting legacy with Argentina due to his competitive nature, inspiring those around him to improve every day. He explained that Leo conveys a certain mindset and demands that his teammates and staff give one hundred percent in every respect. He called him a born competitor who seeks out new challenges even at thirty-nine years old.
The coach pointed out that the club changed the day Messi arrived. He mentioned that Messi drives everyone to improve daily and to be prepared in every way. He also shared that he sees Messi enjoying himself, which makes him happy too.
Back to league action
Inter Miami and Messi prepare to face D.C. United on Saturday night at Nu Stadium in the first game back after the international break. González stated that the team is in a good place and the players who returned from national teams are doing well. He noted that they need to get back to winning ways after a winless streak in regular season matches.
Inter Miami sits in third place on the Eastern Conference table with forty-six points in twenty--seven games. González stressed that defensively they need to be much better, especially against opponents who rely on transitions. Inter Miami will also host New York City FC on October 14 at Nu Stadium.
