Health concerns take center stage

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. The decision came after doctors discovered a superficial blood clot in his calf.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke on Friday and declined to offer many details about the health of his quarterback. Instead, Sirianni chose to focus on his personal connection with Hurts. He explained that he cares deeply about the player and shares a special bond with him, comparing their relationship to being like brothers.

How the injury unfolded

The Eagles released a statement on Thursday explaining the timeline of the injury. Hurts was cleated during Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams. He asked for medical treatment on his calf the following Thursday.

An ultrasound conducted on Saturday in London showed the blood clot. Hurts still played in Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars after team medical staff and doctors reviewed the results. They decided that activity and movement were safe and important for him at that time. However, a follow up ultrasound on Wednesday night revealed movement in the small blood clot. That finding led directly to the choice to sit Hurts. The Eagles have not given a timetable for when he might return.

Next man up for Philadelphia

Most players on the team learned about the situation on Thursday as they walked onto the field for practice. Wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks admitted that it is tough to lose a leader, but emphasized that the team will stick by Hurts while he recovers.

Tanner McKee will start at quarterback in place of Hurts. McKee was chosen in the sixth round of the 2023 draft out of Stanford. Teammates have expressed full confidence in him. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith mentioned that he spoke with Hurts and noted that something this serious puts everything into perspective.
