A Shocking Start to the Season
The Philadelphia Eagles expected their defense to carry them early this season under coordinator Vic Fangio. Instead, they suffered a heavy 27-7 defeat to the Chicago Bears. Chicago third-string quarterback Case Keenum, making his first start in 1,009 days, tore Philly apart by completing 71 percent of his passes and scoring three touchdowns.
Edge rusher Jonathan Greenard admitted things must change quickly. "It just can't happen," Greenard said. He added that the players know they have to be better.
Concerning Numbers and Injury Woes
The statistics show a worrying trend. The Eagles have zero takeaways through three weeks, making them the only NFL team without a turnover. They also have just three sacks. Defensively, they are 23rd in efficiency and 25th in opponent rushing yards allowed per game.
Injuries have also slowed down key players. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter is playing with a cast due to a hairline fracture in his wrist. Linebacker Zack Baun has been sidelined with a concussion, while defensive back Cooper DeJean missed time earlier with calf and abdomen injuries.
Communication Breakdown and Hope
Communication has been a major issue following the departures of Nakobe Dean and Reed Blankenship. A mistake between Riq Woolen and DeJean allowed Kalif Raymond to score a 41-yard touchdown for Chicago. DeJean noted that the team must communicate better to avoid leaving opponents wide open.
Still, there are some positive signs. The Eagles are tied for 10th in pressures with 40, and their passing defense ranks ninth in yards allowed per game. Mukuba and DeJean are now off the injury report, which should help steady the secondary.
