The Contemporary Era Nominees

Eight men have made the ballot for the Baseball Hall of Fame contemporary era committee for managers, executives, and umpires. The committee will meet on December 6 at the winter meetings in San Diego to cast their votes.

The ballot includes retired managers Dusty Baker, Bruce Bochy, Joe Maddon, and Lou Piniella. It also features former general managers Sandy Alderson and Brian Sabean, the late Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner, and former player, broadcaster, and National League President Bill White.

High Profile Managers on the List

Baker managed five teams over 26 seasons, building a regular season record of 2,183 wins and 1,862 losses. He won the World Series in 2022 with Houston and earned Manager of the Year awards in 1993, 1997, and 2000.

Bochy managed for 28 seasons with San Diego, San Francisco, and Texas. He posted a 2,252-2,266 record and won four World Series titles in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2023.

Maddon led the Chicago Cubs to their 2016 World Series victory, their first since 1908. He holds a 1,382-1,216 record across 19 seasons and won three Manager of the Year awards. Piniella compiled an 1,835-1,713 record over 23 seasons, winning the 1990 World Series with Cincinnati. He previously received 11 votes in both 2018 and 2023.

Executives and Officials

Alderson served as general manager for Oakland, helping them win the 1989 World Series, before working as CEO for San Diego and general manager for the Mets. Sabean was general manager for San Francisco from 1996 to 2014, winning three World Series titles.

Turner bought the Braves in 1976 and led them until 1996, with the team winning the 1995 World Series. White won a World Series as a player in 1964, broadcasted for the Yankees, and served as National League President from 1989 to 1994.

Voting Rules and Timeline

A panel of 16 voters will consider the candidates. A nominee needs 75 percent of the vote, which means at least 12 votes, to gain election. Any selected candidate will be inducted on July 25 alongside players chosen by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Candidates who get fewer than five votes will not be eligible for the next ballot in three years. Those who fail to reach five votes on multiple ballots lose eligibility for this committee entirely.
