Suspension Confirmed

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw will miss the upcoming game against the Washington Commanders. The NFL denied his appeal of a one-game suspension on Tuesday.

The suspension comes without pay. It follows an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from Sunday's win against the Seattle Seahawks.

Incident on the Field

The penalty happened with six minutes and thirty seconds left in the first half against Seattle. Greenlaw hit Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold late and out of bounds.

He then got involved in a skirmish with linebacker Ernest Jones IV and head-butted him. Jones was not wearing a helmet at the time.

The league stated that Greenlaw violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1. This rule covers acts contrary to sportsmanship principles.

History of Disciplinary Actions

This is the second one-game suspension for Greenlaw in as many years. Last season, while with the Denver Broncos, he received a one-game suspension for running toward referee Brad Allen and verbally threatening him.

Sunday's ejection was the third of his career. He was also disqualified for a late hit on Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in 2022 and for a sideline dustup against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023.
