Taking Over the Reins

Don Mattingly is officially staying on as the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. The team announced on Wednesday that the 65-year-old reached a two-year deal to keep the job permanently.

Mattingly originally joined the franchise as a bench coach. He took over the manager role on an interim basis after Rob Thomson was fired in April, just 28 games into the season.

Reaching the Postseason

Under Mattingly, the team turned their fortunes around immediately. He finished the season with a 79-55 record, helping the club reach the postseason for the fifth consecutive year.

Even though the squad lost four games in a row during the final week of the regular season, they secured a National League wild-card berth by winning their final game. They eventually bowed out of the playoffs with a 6-2 loss in a decisive Game 3 against the Atlanta Braves.

A Long Baseball Career

Mattingly made it clear publicly that he wanted to return as manager. He brings a great deal of experience to the dugout, having served as a major league manager or coach for 23 consecutive seasons.

Before joining the Phillies, he worked as the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. He also managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins, where he won the NL Manager of the Year award in 2020. During his playing days, he spent 14 seasons with the New York Yankees and won the American League MVP award in 1985.
