Dodgers Keep Faith in Slumping Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani remains in the Dodgers lineup despite a prolonged slump and physical issues as Los Angeles faces a 2-0 deficit against Milwaukee.

Outdoor Practice

Shohei Ohtani prefers to do his work indoors where the environment is controlled and the public is prohibited. Over his first nine seasons in the majors, the sight of him taking batting practice outside has been rare. Lately, though, it is commonplace.

Ohtani took batting practice on the field at Dodger Stadium late Tuesday afternoon. It marked his fourth straight day hitting outdoors, an indication of how prodigious his slump has become.

Managerial Trust

The outdoor session took place moments after what Dodgers manager Dave Roberts described as a great conversation. Ohtani was adamant that he was close to finding something and should remain in the lineup.

There is just complete conviction that he is onto something, Roberts said. He feels like he can help us, and he can help us. For me, that is all I need to hear.

Deep Slump

For eight weeks, Ohtani has been a severely diminished version of the player who dominated the sport. He has not homered since August 18 and has slashed just .156/.283/.200 since then. In the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, he is 1-for-7.

His struggles date back four months. His left knee first began to flare up in early June and later he developed tightness in his right biceps. Despite these physical issues, Ohtani takes full responsibility for his slump and insists his symptoms should not be the reason he cannot hit.
