Freeman on the Mend
Freddie Freeman was left out of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup for Monday night's 4-1 win against the Cincinnati Reds. The first baseman is dealing with soreness in his right knee. This was the third time in five games that Freeman has missed out on a starting spot.
Despite his recent absences, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that putting Freeman on the 10 day injured list is not an option right now. Roberts wants Freeman ready for the postseason but feels a long stint on the sidelines is unnecessary.
Roberts said he does not think the rest needs to be 10 days, but admitted it could be more than one. The manager plans to consult with the training staff and Freeman before making a final decision. Freeman is batting .293 this season but has struggled recently, going 3 for his last 30 with nine strikeouts.
Postseason Race and Ohtani Update
The Dodgers are close to wrapping up the National League West title. Their magic number is down to three to secure their 13th division crown in 14 years. However, the team is highly focused on securing a first round bye in the playoffs.
Getting that extra week of rest is a major target for the roster. The Dodgers held a 2 1/2 game lead over Atlanta for the second seed before Monday's games. Meanwhile, Milwaukee holds the top record in the National League.
In other injury news, Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to hit off a tee in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Ohtani has been on the 15 day injured list since September 8 due to right biceps inflammation. This will be his first time taking swings since his injury. Roberts noted that Ohtani has been lifting weights and receiving treatment.
Relief Pitching Concerns
There are also worries regarding reliever Edwin Diaz. He is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple A Oklahoma City, where he has struggled. Diaz has allowed six earned runs over 3 1/3 innings across four games.
Diaz is recovering from neck inflammation but is also battling control issues. He signed a three year contract worth 59 million dollars in the offseason.
Roberts admitted that Diaz needs to perform better to guarantee a spot on the postseason roster. The right hander has another rehab outing scheduled for Wednesday.
