Fenerbahce Stun Liverpool In Istanbul
Fenerbahce secured their first Champions League win of the season on Wednesday night with an impressive 3-2 victory over Liverpool. The Turkish side came from behind twice during the match to claim all three points.
Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown, and Vedat Muriqi all scored to end a difficult four match winless streak across all competitions for Fenerbahce. Interim head coach Dirk Kuyt praised his squad after the final whistle. He compared the comeback to Liverpool's famous 2005 Champions League final victory against AC Milan, which took place a year before Kuyt joined the English club.
Lessons From Liverpool
Kuyt stepped in as interim manager last week after Ismail Kartal resigned following a 2-1 defeat to rivals Galatasaray. The former Liverpool forward explained that he used lessons learned from his time in England to inspire his players.
He explained that they told each other to stick together and keep believing in themselves. Kuyt mentioned that this mindset was something he learned from Liverpool, a club that still means a lot to him. He expressed how happy he was for everyone involved in making what he called another miracle in Istanbul.
Changing The Season's Course
The win comes at an important time for Fenerbahce. They currently sit sixth in the Turkish Super Lig having lost four of their opening ten games. Kuyt expressed hope that this result against one of Europe's top sides can turn their season around in a positive way.
He insisted that the result was not down to luck, stating that his side created many chances, kept pushing, and fully deserved the victory against a strong opponent.
New Management On The Way
Former Newcastle midfielder Emre Belözoğlu was announced as the club's new permanent manager on Tuesday night. He will now take over a side that has regained confidence following Wednesday night's success.
Kuyt shared details of a conversation with Belözoğlu prior to kickoff. The incoming manager wished Kuyt the best for the game, and Kuyt assured him that he would make sure the players delivered a great performance so the new boss could have a strong start.
