Gómez strikes from distance at the Amex
Brighton midfielder Diego Gómez scored one of the most remarkable goals of the season on Sunday against rivals Crystal Palace. Playing at the Amex Stadium, the Paraguayan star gave fans a moment to remember early in the Premier League match.
In the seventh minute of the game, Gómez collected the ball near the halfway line. He advanced just inside the Crystal Palace half before spotting goalkeeper Walter Benítez off his line. Without hesitating, the midfielder launched the ball over Benítez and watched it drop into the back of the net.
Joining Premier League history
The distance of the strike was measured at 51 metres, which is 56 yards. That makes it the longest range goal scored in the Premier League since 2017.
The last player to score from further out in the competition was Wayne Rooney. Playing for Everton against West Ham, Rooney hit the net from 58 metres, or 64 yards. Gómez has now written his name into the history books alongside that famous effort.
Rapid early goals overpower Palace
The spectacular goal from Gómez put Brighton 2-0 ahead against their biggest rival. Brighton were already in control, but they did not slow down after taking the two goal advantage.
Just three minutes after Gómez scored, Brighton added another goal to move 3-0 ahead in the tenth minute. That incredible early spell put the game beyond Palace very quickly. It also meant Brighton became only the ninth team in Premier League history to score three goals within the first 10 minutes of a match.
