Defensive struggles in Charlotte

The Detroit Lions fell 32-26 on the road against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday night. It was the third time in four weeks that the Detroit defense gave up at least 30 points. The unit is currently allowing 31.8 points per game, which is the highest in the NFL.

Dan Campbell shouldered the responsibility for the poor defensive performance. He stated that the team will try everything before thinking about moving on from second year defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. When asked about Sheppard, Campbell said he was focusing on improving right now with the current group.

Injuries and secondary issues

Most of the trouble has happened in the secondary, which continues to deal with major injuries. Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin had to leave the game in the second half due to a hamstring injury.

Carolina wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan had a massive game against the Detroit secondary, finishing with 14 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Cornerback D.J. Reed admitted he is not playing up to his standard. Reed told reporters that it is a player issue rather than a coaching problem, adding that the game comes down to winning one on one matchups.

Players back the coaching staff

Frustration filled the visitor locker room after the final whistle, but the players made it clear they do not blame the coaches. All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell, who recorded 14 tackles, voiced his support for the defensive coordinator.

Jack Campbell stated that the players bring the scheme to life and the blame rests on them. He added that Kelvin Sheppard works hard and that both the head coach and the players believe in him. The team now turns its attention to fixing mistakes before playing in Arizona next week.
