Contract Talks Pause
The Detroit Lions and star tight end Sam LaPorta have stopped working on a long-term contract. Both sides tried to reach an agreement during the first few weeks of the season, but talks ended after a push on Friday and Saturday did not result in a deal. LaPorta wants to fully focus on the field, meaning any new contract discussions will wait until the offseason.
Barring a major breakthrough, LaPorta is set to become a free agent in 2027. He would rank as one of the top available players regardless of position. Detroit still holds the franchise tag option. The team continues to negotiate deals during the season, and there is a small chance they try again to make LaPorta one of the highest paid tight ends in the league.
Strong Start to the Season
LaPorta has proven his health after overcoming back surgery. Through three games, he has played about 90 percent of Detroit offensive snaps, recording 14 catches for 144 yards while maintaining a high level of blocking.
LaPorta hoped to secure a new deal similar to Tucker Kraft, who agreed to a four-year, $75 million contract with the Green Bay Packers prior to the season. LaPorta and his agent, Jack Bechta, could not come to terms with the Lions. The team has signed several other stars to long-term extensions over the last two years, including Jahmyr Gibbs, Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, and Kerby Joseph.
