Deshaun Watson Wins Back Cleveland Fans With Consecutive Clutch Drives

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has turned his season around with two straight late game comebacks to lead his team to a 2-1 start.

The Turnaround

Deshaun Watson is finally giving Cleveland Browns fans something to cheer about. After facing heavy boos from the home crowd in the preseason, the quarterback was seen hugging general manager Andrew Berry after a 21-18 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 3.

The victory was Watson's second fourth quarter comeback in two weeks. It is a major turnaround for a player who signed a massive five year, $230 million guaranteed contract in 2022 but has struggled with injuries, suspensions, and poor form. Before this run, many expected the Browns to cut Watson at the end of the season and take an $86 million dead cap hit.

Winning the Job

Watson had to fight for his starting spot this year. Coach Todd Monken named him the starter after a long competition with 2025 draft pick Shedeur Sanders. The Browns also have Dillon Gabriel on injured reserve and Taylen Green as another young quarterback option.

Monken stood by Watson even after a poor 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1. That faith paid off in Week 2, when Watson led a comeback to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-19. He followed that up with another game winning drive against the Panthers.

The Numbers

So far, Watson has completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 587 yards, with five touchdowns and one interception. His overall QBR of 62.3 ranks 15th in the league, but he has been great when it matters most.

In the fourth quarter, Watson's QBR rises to 95.1, which is the fifth highest in the league. He has also run for 105 yards, showing he can still move well after recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. While team sources say he is not yet locked in as the long term answer, his short term play has put the Browns in a great position.
