Mavericks Center Sidelined

Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II will miss the start of training camp. The big man has not been cleared to participate as he continues his recovery from surgery on his right foot.

The team begins its training camp on Saturday. At this stage, it remains unclear whether Lively will be ready in time for the start of the regular season.

This injury setback comes after Lively played an important role as a rookie. He helped Dallas reach the 2024 NBA Finals, but his career has been slowed down by ongoing foot issues.

Ongoing Foot Problems

Lively has struggled with his right foot for over a year. The foot has required two surgeries in the last 14 months.

These physical issues have limited his time on the court. Over the past two seasons, the center has managed to play in only 43 games in total.

His second surgery took place in December. That operation ended his 2025 to 2026 campaign after he made just seven appearances.

Recovery and Long-Term Plans

Despite the slow recovery, there is some positive news. Lively is currently ramping up his work to get cleared for basketball activities. Sources say the Mavericks are not discouraged by how his recovery is going.

The 22 year old is now entering the final season of his rookie contract. He was selected as the number 12 pick in the 2023 draft.

If he can stay healthy, the 7 foot 1 defender is expected to be a major part of the team. Dallas wants to build a contending team around him and reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg.

When active, Lively brings great quality to the court. He is an athletic big man who is an excellent finisher and a versatile defender. He has career averages of 8.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game while playing an average of 22.9 minutes.
