Cooper removed from exempt list

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell removed Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper from the exempt list on Friday. Cooper is now cleared to return to practice and is available for the Week 7 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The NFL granted Denver a one week roster exemption for Cooper. He can be added to the active 53 man roster at any point over the next week. While on the list, Cooper was paid and could attend team meetings, weight training, and conditioning work.

Legal details and league policy

Cooper was arrested twice in June on domestic violence charges and was placed on the exempt list on August 30. He faces a felony charge of second degree assault by strangulation and three misdemeanors. A nurse report in police documents stated that an injury from choking created a substantial risk of death or traumatic brain injury.

Cooper was in court last week and has a trial set for March 2 to 4, along with a pre trial hearing on February 19. The NFL stated that its review remains ongoing. Cooper could still face a suspension under the personal conduct policy. If suspended later, he will have to return the weekly checks he received while on the exempt list.

Impact on the Broncos squad

Broncos coach Sean Payton set guidelines and therapy for Cooper following the arrest while waiting for the legal process. Cooper was a seventh round pick in 2021 and has recorded 31.5 sacks in 81 career games, including eight sacks last season. He has started every game over the past three seasons.

Denver is currently 4-2 after a Thursday night win against the Seattle Seahawks. Cooper practiced throughout training camp, so his return adds a regular starter back to the defense.
