A Rocky Return to Playcalling

Sean Payton returned to playcalling duties for the Denver Broncos on Sunday, resulting in a 23-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. The team entered the game near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories. Payton announced Thursday that he had decided to take away playcalling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb earlier in the week.

Regarding the transition, Payton said the guys compartmentalize things pretty well. He added that he honestly did not have a big kumbaya meeting about the change.

Choppy Offense and Defensive Rescues

The offensive numbers were not pretty and the unit struggled at times. The Broncos managed 224 net yards, went 1 of 12 on third down, and quarterback Bo Nix threw for 123 passing yards. Payton wanted to achieve more balance between running and passing while reducing the calorie count in the game plan for Nix.

The Broncos ran the ball 29 times and threw it 27 times. They trailed 17-10 at the start of the fourth quarter. Four of the scoring drives, including three in the final quarter, started in Chargers territory because the defense forced turnovers. The defense forced a turnover on downs, intercepted Justin Herbert, and recovered a fumble.

Handling the Transition

Players and coaches praised Davis Webb for how he handled the sudden change. Payton lauded Webb for his approach during the week of preparation. Bo Nix also noted that Webb handled the situation really well despite the difficulty and social media attention.

Tackle Mike McGlinchey stated that winning is all that matters. He mentioned that whoever calls the plays, he just hauls it.
