Injury Woes for Denver Backfield
The Denver Broncos are facing serious questions in their running game ahead of their upcoming clash against the Los Angeles Rams. Coach Sean Payton is dealing with his own back issues, but the team's injuries at running back are becoming a major headache.
Both J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey are dealing with hamstring injuries. This has left their availability for Sunday night's game in serious doubt. Dobbins currently leads the Broncos with 18 carries and 72 rushing yards after two games, making his potential absence a major blow.
Backfield Options and Recent Struggles
Dobbins left last Sunday's victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the third quarter after injuring his left hamstring. Meanwhile, Harvey was already inactive for that game due to a hamstring issue he picked up during the season opening loss to Kansas City.
With these injuries, rookie Jonah Coleman could be forced into a leading role. Coleman showed promise by gaining 33 of his 39 rushing yards during the game closing drive against the Jaguars. Payton noted that there is a lot to figure out this week regarding who will run the ball. The Broncos also have Tyler Badie on the active roster and Cody Schrader on the practice squad.
Denver is still trying to find its offensive identity. Their running game has been highly inconsistent. In the game against Jacksonville, the Broncos failed to score a touchdown from the 1 yard line. Dobbins had three straight carries that went for no gain, no gain, and a loss of a yard. Wil Lutz ended up kicking a 20 yard field goal instead. Payton described the sequence as a real bad possession.
