Payton Backs His Coordinator
The Denver Broncos are keeping their faith in Davis Webb. Despite a tough start to the season, a team source says the Broncos have a high level of confidence and comfort in Webb as their offensive playcaller.
Denver struggled in their first game under Webb last Monday in Kansas City. The offense managed only 176 yards from scrimmage in a 31-10 defeat against the Chiefs.
Head coach Sean Payton is standing by his first year offensive coordinator. Payton believes Webb will be a successful playcaller and says the entire offensive unit must share the blame for the poor performance. Payton noted that the game did not go as hoped. He said there was dirt on a ton of people's hands, starting with himself, and added that the team has to learn from it.
Rebounding From a Rough Debut
Webb was a popular coaching candidate in the offseason. He interviewed for head coaching roles with the Las Vegas Raiders, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens. He also had chances to become an offensive coordinator elsewhere. Instead, Denver kept him and promoted him from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator in February.
To help Webb succeed, the players on the field need to step up. Quarterback Bo Nix had a rough game in Kansas City. He fumbled three times, losing one of them, threw an interception, and was sacked a career high four times.
When asked how the offense can make things easier for Webb, Nix kept it simple. The quarterback said they need to get first downs and score points. Denver now returns home to face the Jacksonville Jaguars, who beat them 34-20 in Denver last season.
