A Major Signing for Udinese
Italian Serie A club Udinese have officially signed former Real Madrid defender David Alaba. The 34 year old was a free agent after his contract with the Spanish giants expired at the end of last season.
Alaba spent five years with Real Madrid. During his time in Spain, he won 11 trophies, including two Champions Leagues, two league titles, and two FIFA Club World Cups.
Udinese general manager Franco Collavino expressed his delight at the signing. He stated that welcoming Alaba is a source of immense satisfaction for the club, calling him an established champion and leader.
Bouncing Back From Injury
The defender is looking to get his career back on track after a tough period. Alaba suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2023. This injury required surgery and limited his playing time on the pitch.
Before his spell in Spain, Alaba had a highly successful 13 year career with German giants Bayern Munich. In Germany, he won 10 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.
On the international stage, Alaba has played 117 times for Austria. He also captained his national team during the World Cup this summer.
Alaba Hungry For More Success
Despite his long list of achievements, Alaba insists he is not moving to Italy to retire. He stated that he still wants to win and compete. He said he wants to achieve something special and that is the mindset he is bringing to Udinese.
Alaba explained that he wants to bring his experience to the dressing room and help the younger players. He also noted that coach Kosta Runjaić made his role in the team very clear. He clarified that he did not come to the club just to be the veteran or to wind down his career.
He joins an Udinese side that currently sits 13th in the Serie A table. The team has collected four points from their opening five games and has lost their last three matches. He will be hoping to help turn their form around quickly.
