Roberts Backs Ohtani Recovery
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is confident that Shohei Ohtani will be ready for the postseason. Ohtani recently returned from a 13 game spell on the injured list due to right biceps discomfort.
Roberts plans to monitor Ohtani's workload but trusts the four time MVP to manage his own fitness. Instead of daily check ins, the manager will let Ohtani communicate directly with the medical staff.
The Dodgers will have five days off during the wild card rounds. This break will give Ohtani time to rest and take part in simulated at bats to stay sharp.
Ohtani Role and Progress
Ohtani is playing as the leadoff hitter. He made his third consecutive appearance on Friday against San Francisco. Before that game, he was batting .278 with 30 home runs and 81 RBIs this season.
Although Ohtani went 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts on the mound, he will not pitch again this year because of his injuries. This means he cannot repeat his performance from last year's National League Championship Series against Milwaukee, where he threw six scoreless innings and hit three home runs in Game 4.
Roberts wants Ohtani to play five consecutive games to end the regular season, getting between 20 and 23 at bats. The manager said Ohtani looked exactly how he hoped he would since returning. Roberts said he needs Ohtani to be at full strength and to take what the pitchers give him.
