Major Practice Injury

Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a serious foot injury during practice on Friday. The issue occurred in a team drill on what was supposed to be a light training day.

Initial X rays showed significant damage to his foot. Payne will undergo additional tests on Saturday to determine the full extent of the damage. There is concern that the defensive star could be out for the rest of the season. Payne is currently in the final year of his contract with Washington.

Setback For Washington Defense

Losing Payne is a major problem for Washington as they prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. The team currently holds a 1-4-1 record in coach Dan Quinn's third season in charge.

The defense is already dealing with another key absence. Starting defensive end Javon Kinlaw has been ruled out for Sunday's match due to a knee injury.

Earlier on Friday, coach Dan Quinn praised Payne's contribution to the squad. Quinn noted his strength inside and power, adding that some of his dirty work does not always show up in the stat sheet.

Payne's Career And Replacement Options

Payne has been a main fixture on the defensive line since Washington picked him 13th overall in 2018. He is the longest tenured position player on the team. He started every game between 2020 and 2024, missed only two games last season, and has started every match this year. His best year came in 2022 when he made the Pro Bowl after recording 11.5 sacks.

Washington does have some depth with Deatrich Wise Jr. and Charles Omenihu. The team also opened the 21 day practice window for defensive end Jer'Zhan Newton. Newton suffered a torn pectoral muscle against the Miami Dolphins on August 14. He is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the 2-5 Eagles.
