A Tough Return for Jones
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones made his return to action on Sunday, 280 days after tearing his right Achilles tendon. It was his first live game in nine months, but the comeback did not go as planned. The Colts suffered a 41-23 defeat against the Baltimore Ravens.
Jones admitted his performance was poor. "Just not good enough," he said, noting that the offense did not move the ball well or score.
The quarterback completed 19 of 31 passes for 166 yards. This was his lowest passing yardage in a full game with the Colts. He averaged just 5.4 yards per pass attempt, which is also his worst average since joining the team. Under pressure, he struggled even more, completing only one of six passes for zero yards and getting sacked twice.
Team Struggles and Coach's Reaction
The Colts signed Jones to a two-year, $88 million deal in the spring, hoping to recreate the offensive success from early 2025. This performance raises questions, but coach Shane Steichen urged everyone to stay calm.
Steichen pointed out that it is only the first game of the season. He noted that the defense allowed 506 yards, the offensive line struggled against blitzes, and the receivers did not help Jones much. "There's so much football in front of us," Steichen said.
The game also saw the return of receiver Alec Pierce, who had been out since March following ankle surgery. Pierce was limited to around 40 snaps but still managed to lead the Colts in receiving with four catches for 61 yards. He also hurt his left wrist during the game, but scans came back negative and he was able to return.
