Farke defends striker decision

Leeds manager Daniel Farke has spoken out after striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin chose not to take the knee before their draw against Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday.

Players across Premier League fixtures took the knee over the weekend as part of the league's No Room for Racism campaign. Calvert-Lewin joined a small group of players who opted against taking the knee before their matches.

Farke defended his striker after the match. "Dom is more or less like, 'No, I don't go down. I show my respect by standing up,' every individual is different and shows respect for this campaign in a different way," Farke said.

Dressing room unity

Farke praised the initiative and explained why football dressing rooms set a strong example for society.

He described the campaign as "a good campaign and a good topic that football and sports, in general, support situations like this because a dressing room is a perfect example of how we should all live together."

Farke added, "Different passports, different languages, different religions, but they are all together as human beings and friends who work together toward one target. This is how the world should be."

Calvert-Lewin was not alone in his stance. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Issa Diop and Marc Guéhi also chose to stand before their games on Saturday.

History of the gesture

The league's campaign aligns with Black History Month. The gesture was introduced in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd by former police officer Derek Chauvin in the United States.

Wilfried Zaha, then of Crystal Palace, was the first player to opt against taking the knee before a game in 2021.
