A bond forged in Dallas
Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn first crossed paths as players for the Dallas Cowboys in 2005. Glenn was a veteran cornerback who played bigger than his five foot nine frame. Campbell was a giant tight end. They played under legendary coach Bill Parcells and developed a strong connection.
Campbell promised Glenn back then that if he ever got a head coaching job, Glenn would be his defensive coordinator. That promise came true in 2021 when Campbell took over the Detroit Lions. Together, they spent years rebuilding the franchise.
Standing strong in tough times
Their partnership was tested early. In 2022, the Lions started the season with a poor 1-6 record. After a 32-27 loss to the Miami Dolphins, fans and critics wanted Glenn fired. The defense was giving up a league-high 32.1 points per game.
Campbell stood by his friend. The Lions kept Glenn and instead fired defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant. The decision paid off. The defense improved, allowing just 20.2 points per game over the final ten matches. Detroit won eight of those games and set the foundation for four consecutive winning seasons.
Reunion at Ford Field
Glenn eventually left Detroit to become the head coach of the New York Jets. Campbell admitted that seeing Glenn get the job was both one of the best and worst days of his life because he was losing a piece of his team.
This Sunday, the two friends will face each other as head coaches for the first time. Both teams enter the game with 1-1 records. It will be an emotional return to Ford Field for Glenn, who helped build the current Lions squad.
