New home in Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed on a two-way NBA deal with Walter Clayton Jr. He joins the team after clearing waivers, following his release earlier in the week by the Memphis Grizzlies ahead of the roster cut-down deadline.

Previous stops and college success

Memphis originally acquired Clayton from Utah in an eight--player trade. During his time with the Grizzlies last season, Clayton played twenty-four games. He averaged 9.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 5.7 assists, while shooting 36.6% from three-point range.

Before his time in the NBA, Clayton was the number eighteen pick in the 2025 draft. He helped Florida win its third national title, earning recognition as the Final Four Most Outstanding Player and a consensus first-team All-American.

Backcourt depth for the Mavericks

The Mavericks remain thin on ball handlers, even with Kyrie Irving returning from an ACL injury. Clayton arrives to provide much-needed depth in the backcourt for the team.
