New face on defense

The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in longtime NFL coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant. He will work alongside first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker. The team is looking to improve a defense that currently ranks 31st in yards and 26th in points allowed through five games. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said they convinced Pettine that it made sense for him to come out of retirement and add his experience and value. Parker actually approached Pettine about joining the staff in January, but Pettine had just announced his retirement at the time. Schottenheimer noted the move would have happened even if the team had won its previous game.

Familiar faces and staff struggles

Pettine previously served as assistant head coach with the Minnesota Vikings and was the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. In 2019, Pettine gave Parker his first NFL job as a quality control coach. Parker is in his first year as a coordinator after spending time with the Philadelphia Eagles. While players have praised his communication, the production on the field has fallen short. The Cowboys have the worst-ranked run defense in the league and have yet to record an interception this season. Opposing quarterbacks have completed 72.3% of their passes, and the unit has given up at least 20 points in the last 12 games. Pettine should provide a holistic approach and act as a sounding board for the young defensive staff.
