Warriors Overcome Huge Early Deficit
The Golden State Warriors pulled off a historic 112-95 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers in San Francisco on Friday night. Golden State became the first team in the past 30 seasons to trail by 25 points and still win the game by at least 17 points.
Luka Doncic started fast for the Lakers, scoring 21 points and delivering five assists in the first quarter alone. That helped Los Angeles jump to a 38-15 lead. The cushion grew to 25 points early in the second quarter before the Warriors responded.
Second Quarter Turnaround Sets Up Curry
Golden State turned the game around with Doncic resting on the bench. Warriors reserves Georges Niang and De'Anthony Melton scored a combined 27 bench points, knocking down second quarter shots from deep to spark the team.
Stephen Curry scored eight points and added three assists in a late second quarter run, setting up Brandin Podziemski and Al Horford. The Warriors posted a 38-15 response in the second quarter. In the shot clock era, it was the biggest first quarter deficit ever overcome to tie or lead by halftime.
Curry Shines As Lendeborg Struggles
Curry scored 31 points on the night, giving him 75 points over his last two games. The signature moment came in the third quarter when Curry used a dribble combination to drop Doncic to the floor before hitting a 3 pointer over him. Curry later said he did not expect it to get that nasty.
Podziemski added 21 points and six assists for Golden State. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg struggled after pregame trash talk, finishing with six points, six fouls, and five turnovers. Lendeborg called it the worst game of his life, but Curry noted the team has his back as he learns.
Looking Ahead To Sunday
Lakers star Doncic finished with 37 points in the loss. Golden State coach Steve Kerr noted after the game that big leads vanish quickly in modern basketball because of pace and 3 point shooting.
With the victory, Golden State moved to 3-3 on the season after losing their first three games. The Warriors put their three game winning streak on the line on Sunday night when they take on the LA Clippers.
