Cucurella Reveals Failed Attempt to Bring Rodri to Real Madrid

Real Madrid defender Marc Cucurella has admitted he tried to convince Rodri to join him at the Bernabéu this summer. The Spanish midfielder instead decided to sign for rivals Barcelona, who currently sit six points clear at the top of the LaLiga table under manager Hansi Flick.

Both players are currently training with the Spain national team ahead of their Nations League match against England at Wembley on Saturday. Speaking to Spanish radio, Cucurella explained how he tried to influence his international teammate before the transfer went through.

"I don't really like pressuring or influencing teammates," Cucurella said. "These are personal things. It's true that I sent him a subtle message, before the news broke, saying I hoped we'd become teammates."

Life Under Mourinho

Rodri replied to the message but did not give his plans away. Cucurella said he is happy for his friend but added that he hopes Rodri does not have too much success with Barcelona.

Cucurella is one of six new arrivals at Real Madrid this season under new manager José Mourinho. It has been a tough start for the new look squad. Real Madrid have already suffered two defeats, losing to Real Betis and also dropping points in last weekend's derby against Atlético Madrid.

"We didn't finish the period before the break in the best way," Cucurella said. He added that the team is still trying to find a good balance and build a united group, stating that if they finish the season well, nobody will remember the slow start.

Defending the Stats

During the derby, Atlético Madrid heavily targeted Real Madrid's left side, which features Cucurella and Vinícius Júnior. The defender explained that they have not had much time to train together yet, but praised Vinícius Júnior for putting in the effort to make the partnership work.

Recent statistics also showed that Real Madrid players run less distance than other teams in LaLiga. Cucurella dismissed these worries, saying the numbers are only being discussed because of the derby defeat. He insisted that the players do run a lot during matches.
