Cubs and Red Sox Series Finale Moved to Florida Due to Bad Weather

The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs will play their final regular season game at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The league decided to relocate the game because of a poor weather forecast in Boston.

A nor'easter is expected to bring heavy rain to the Boston area on Saturday and Sunday. The two teams already played a doubleheader on Friday to get ahead of the bad weather.

Neither team wanted to wait until Monday to play. Both teams are starting their wild card playoff series on Tuesday, so a Monday game was not a good option.

Scheduling challenges for Cubs

The league originally planned to play the third game on Saturday in Boston. However, the forecast forced them to change the date and the location.

Chicago was not happy with the plan to play on Saturday. It would have disrupted their starting pitching rotation.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell explained the issue earlier in the week. He said that they never move games up within a five day window of a starting rotation, so they could not have someone ready to pitch on Saturday.

Now, the Cubs do not have to worry about that. Both teams will fly to St. Petersburg late on Friday. They will have Saturday off before playing the final game on Sunday.

The Cubs are still playing for their seeding in the National League wild card race. The Red Sox have already secured the number three seed in the American League.
