Disastrous Start in East Rutherford
The Dallas Cowboys started their season with a disappointing 28-20 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday night. It was a tough night for head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who admitted the team did not play up to its potential.
The rebuilt Dallas defense struggled to contain the Giants. New York converted nine of 11 third down opportunities and rushed for 165 yards. Coach Schottenheimer noted that while the defeat feels bad, it is a long season and the team will not panic.
Costly Mistakes and Injuries
The Cowboys offense struggled to find its rhythm, holding the ball only twice in the second half. Quarterback Dak Prescott threw for 175 yards, completing 22 of his 34 passes. A key interception by Prescott in the first half allowed the Giants to take the lead with a touchdown pass from Jaxson Dart to Isaiah Likely.
This loss mirrors the start of their previous season, when they also lost their opening game to a divisional rival. With several new starters on defense, communication breakdowns proved costly for Dallas throughout the night.
To make matters worse, veteran safety Malik Hooker suffered a fractured forearm during the game. The Cowboys also hurt themselves with nine penalties. Running back Javonte Williams scored a late touchdown but was called for a taunting penalty. This pushed back their two point attempt, and kicker Brandon Aubrey missed the subsequent 48 yard extra point.
