Cowboys Defense Focuses on Communication After Rough Start

The Dallas Cowboys defense had a tough start to the season, losing 28-20 to the New York Giants. New defensive coordinator Christian Parker saw his unit struggle in multiple areas. They allowed 165 rushing yards, gave up three touchdown passes, and let quarterback Jaxson Dart complete 79.3% of his passes.

The biggest issue was third down defense. The Giants converted 9 of 11 third down opportunities, keeping the Dallas offense off the field. Coach Brian Schottenheimer and Parker said the main problem was communication. Schottenheimer explained that calls need to be louder and clearer, and players must use hand signals to show they received the message.

Getting Back to Work

To fix these errors, the defense adjusted their walkthroughs and practice periods this week. They are preparing for a loud home crowd at AT&T Stadium by practicing verbal and nonverbal communication.

Parker is confident the team can bounce back quickly. He noted that one bad game does not define the season. He said they watched the tape, looked in the mirror, and became accountable for their mistakes so they can move on.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams agreed that the mistakes are easy to fix. He pointed out that they practiced these exact communication drills throughout training camp. Captain Kenny Clark added that the team needs urgency and must attack the week to play the way they know they can.
