Burnes heads back to the injured list
The Arizona Diamondbacks received difficult news regarding their pitching rotation on Friday. Right handed starter Corbin Burnes was placed on the 15 day injured list because of shoulder inflammation. The roster move arrived right before his planned start on the mound on Saturday.
To cover the open spot, the Diamondbacks recalled right handed pitcher Jose Cabrera from Triple A Reno. Team management is looking over its options for Saturday night, with their choices resting heavily on how Friday night turns out.
Tough comeback for the starter
Burnes has made only three starts this year. He returned to the major leagues on Sept. 8 after spending 15 months recovering from Tommy John surgery.
His brief time on the field has been difficult. Burnes recorded a 7.84 ERA across 10⅓ innings of work. Over that time, he struck out eight batters and issued four walks without earning a decision. Now, his latest physical trouble forces him back out of action.
The fight for the final playoff spot
Arizona is working to stay in contention for the final National League wild card spot. Both Chicago and San Diego have already clinched their places in the postseason.
Philadelphia lost 2-0 against Tampa Bay, giving Arizona an opening. The Diamondbacks entered their game in San Diego trailing by 1½ games for the final spot, with their elimination magic number down to two. They produced an early 6-2 lead during the game with home runs from Nolan Arenado, Lars Nootbaar, and Jordan Lawlar.
