Mariota forced off with knee injury

Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a knee injury during Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts. The injury happened in the second series of the game, forcing Mariota off the field.

Mariota hurt his right knee when he was sacked by defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore on a third and goal play from the six yard line. After a brief visit to the medical tent, Mariota was able to walk to the locker room on his own.

This injury leaves Washington in a difficult spot. Mariota was already starting in place of franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels, who missed his second straight game with a dislocated left elbow.

Rookie quarterback takes over

With Mariota out, the Commanders turned to rookie quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis. The seventh round draft pick had to step up and take his first ever NFL snaps in a tough situation.

Before he had to leave the field, Mariota had thrown for 46 yards and made a 35 yard run on a zone read keeper to set up a field goal. This is Mariota's third season with Washington, where he has started 10 games. He was coming off a strong performance last week, leading Washington to a 33-31 win over the Seattle Seahawks with 183 passing yards and three touchdowns.

The Commanders were already dealing with several key absences before Mariota went down. Top wide receiver Terry McLaurin missed the game due to a hamstring injury he picked up during Friday's practice. Starting right guard Sam Cosmi was also ruled out, missing his second consecutive game.
