Mariota sidelined with knee injury
Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee during Sunday's 30-13 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Coach Dan Quinn confirmed the injury on Monday but said there is no clear timeline for when Mariota will return to the field.
Mariota sustained the injury when defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore sacked him on a third and goal play. Before leaving the game, Mariota had guided Washington to a 6-0 lead with two field goal drives. Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis came on in relief, completing 15 of 33 passes for 183 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
This is the second time Mariota has dealt with this specific knee injury. He suffered the same issue during a preseason game against Miami on August 14 but was able to return to practice on September 1.
Daniels set to return
While Mariota is out, the Commanders are expecting starting quarterback Jayden Daniels to return to full practice this week. Quinn hopes Daniels will be ready to start this Sunday against the New York Giants.
Daniels missed the last two games due to a dislocated left elbow, which allowed Mariota to start. Daniels has only played a full game five times since the start of the 2025 season.
The Commanders are also dealing with other injury issues. Return specialist Jaylin Lane is out for the season after fracturing and dislocating his ankle during a kick return. However, the team hopes safety Nick Cross, right guard Sam Cosmi, and running back Rachaad White could return soon.
