A Painful Derby Defeat
Chelsea defender Levi Colwill admitted the team was left hurt after a tough 3-0 defeat against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. The Blues looked much better defensively in the first half compared to some of their recent shaky matches. They did not look as chaotic in midfield and defence as they have earlier this season.
However, the game changed completely in the 61st minute. Poor marking at a corner allowed Jaidon Anthony to head home unmarked from close range. After going behind, Chelsea struggled to keep their composure. Colwill explained that the team tried to push too hard for an equaliser, which left them completely open at the back and led to misplaced passes.
Late Goals Seal Chelsea's Fate
Brentford took full advantage of Chelsea's desperation. In the 83rd minute, Kevin Schade ran through on goal. His shot was saved by Emiliano Martínez, but Igor Thiago was there to tap in the rebound for his first league goal of the season.
Deep into stoppage time, Fábio Carvalho added a third goal by finishing another cross from Schade. Colwill admitted that the second and third goals really hurt the team. He noted that the second half performance was simply not good enough, adding that there is plenty of work to do during the international break.
Missing Men and Record Woes
Chelsea entered the match in great scoring form, having netted 18 times in their previous six matches. However, the absence of forward João Pedro was a major blow. His replacement, Danny Welbeck, struggled to link up effectively with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.
The heavy defeat also leaves manager Xabi Alonso in a difficult position. He is now only the sixth manager in Premier League history to have his team concede two or more goals in each of his first five matches. Alonso admitted after the game that his side was out of control. Colwill warned that the team cannot just rely on the front three to save them, saying everyone must work together to improve.
