Late Drama In Ohio
Columbus Crew snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over MLS Cup holders Inter Miami on Sunday. Substitute Jamal Thiare scored the winning goal in the eighth minute of second half stoppage time to secure the points for the hosts.
The late goal came shortly after Miami substitute Santiago Morales was sent off. Miami goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo spilled a shot into the path of Thiare, who quickly scored on the rebound.
Columbus had taken an early lead in the first half. Former Miami striker Josef Martinez converted a penalty after Yannick Bright fouled him in the area. Miami trailed for just five minutes before their captain responded.
Messi Magic From Distance
Lionel Messi equalized for Inter Miami in the 33rd minute with a brilliant free kick. From a set piece wide on the right wing, Messi curled the ball into the far top corner of the net with his left foot.
This was Messi's 12th direct free kick goal for Miami and his sixth this season. The 39 year old now has 21 goals in the MLS this year, leading the Golden Boot race by three goals over Petar Musa of FC Dallas.
Messi had more chances to score in the second half. However, Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte saved one effort from distance, and Messi sent another shot into the side netting.
Playoff Hopes And Table Standings
Columbus will feel the win was fully deserved. Anass Zaroury was denied by the woodwork on three separate occasions during the match. The win lifts Columbus to 12th place in the Eastern Conference, keeping them in the race for a playoff spot.
For Inter Miami, the defeat leaves them in third place in the Eastern Conference. They are level on points with second placed New England Revolution but remain 14 points behind the runaway leaders Nashville SC.
Messi will now play his final match for Argentina on October 6. The forward announced his international retirement in late August and will play his farewell game against Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
