Another Rough Night in Denver
The Colorado Rockies reached a new low on Tuesday night. Former Rockies All Star Nolan Arenado got three hits and pitcher Michael Soroka threw seven innings of two hit ball to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-2 win at Coors Field. The loss was witnessed by an announced crowd of 19,324 fans and about 800 dogs on the team's Bark at the Park night.
This defeat guaranteed Colorado its fourth consecutive season with at least 100 losses. They are now just the fifth club in major league history to reach this negative milestone in four straight years. The last team to do so was the New York Mets from 1962 through 1965.
Struggles on the Mound and in the Division
Colorado has found it incredibly hard to keep opponents from scoring. Playing a mile above sea level, the Rockies entered Tuesday with a team ERA of 5.57, which is the worst in the major leagues. Colorado has finished with the worst team ERA every season since 2022. If they finish last again this year, they will be only the third team since 1913 to have the worst ERA in the majors for five straight seasons.
The team also plays in a very tough division. This year, Colorado went a combined 5-21 against their division rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. Since the start of the 2023 season, the Rockies have a record of 220-423. This is the worst record in the major leagues, putting them 23 games behind the Chicago White Sox.
Small Signs of Improvement
Despite the poor record, there are some bright spots. The Rockies did improve after losing a franchise record 119 games last year. Rookie first baseman TJ Rumfield entered Tuesday fifth in the National League with a .300 batting average. He also led all qualified rookies in batting average and on-base percentage.
Additionally, 26 year old catcher Hunter Goodman made the All Star team for the second year in a row. He is now just one home run away from becoming the first Rockies player to hit 40 home runs in a single season since 2019.
