Pitching Dominance
Gavin Williams put on a show on Saturday night. He struck out 12 batters and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. Cleveland pitchers totaled 21 strikeouts, setting a record for a nine inning postseason game. Williams became the third pitcher in history to get the final out of one game and start the next when facing elimination.
Relievers Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis, and Cade Smith finished the job. Smith earned his first career five-out save by striking out the side in the ninth inning. The Chicago offense struggled all series, managing only three hits in this game and striking out 75 times overall.
Ramirez Delivers
Jose Ramirez provided the only scoring of the night. Steven Kwan singled to lead off the fourth inning, setting the stage for Ramirez. He hit a two-run homer off Sean Burke just over the right-field wall.
Statcast data showed the home run came on a pitch just 0.74 feet above the ground. It was the lowest pitch hit for a postseason home run since tracking began in 2008. It was also the lowest pitch Ramirez has ever hit for a home run in his career.
Next Up For Cleveland
The win completed a comeback from an 0-2 deficit in the best-of-five series. Cleveland will now open the AL Championship Series at Tampa Bay on Monday night.
Cleveland is seeking its first World Series appearance since 2016 and its first title since 1948. Tampa Bay won five of six games against Cleveland during the regular season.
