Watson Reports Symptoms
The Cleveland Browns announced on Wednesday that starting quarterback Deshaun Watson has entered the concussion protocol. His availability for Sunday's road game against the New Orleans Saints is now uncertain.
In a statement, the team said that Watson reported concussion symptoms to the medical staff on Tuesday morning. He previously took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Pittsburgh Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker on the opening possession of last Sunday's game.
Previous Medical Evaluations
During that game, Watson missed three plays while being checked for a concussion. The Browns stated he received a game-day evaluation from an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant and was cleared to return.
Watson was also evaluated by the medical staff after the game and again on Monday. He showed no symptoms during those checks before finally reporting them on Tuesday morning.
Season Statistics and Backups
The Browns currently hold a 5-3 record and sit in third place in the AFC North, just one game behind the Steelers. Watson has started the first eight games of this season, completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,806 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions.
If Watson fails to clear the concussion protocol before Sunday, Shedeur Sanders could make his first start of the season. Sanders is a 2025 fifth-round pick who has thrown only three passes this year. Dillon Gabriel returned from injured reserve last week as the emergency quarterback, and rookie Taylen Green is also on the roster.
