VAR error decides Manchester derby
Manchester City took a 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but the match will be remembered for a massive refereeing mistake. Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking Bruno Fernandes. Despite playing with ten men, City found the net when Josko Gvardiol's cross deflected off Patrick Dorgu to Erling Haaland, who scored.
The goal should have been ruled out. Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position and clearly tried to head the ball. Even though he missed it, his action distracted goalkeeper Senne Lammens and defender Lisandro Martinez. The VAR team of Matt Donohue and Blake Antrobus failed to advise referee Michael Oliver to review the play. Pro Ref, the rebranded referees association, quickly admitted the procedural error after the game.
Tough times for United, Chelsea and Real Madrid
While United could point to Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo hitting the woodwork, they lacked a clear plan. Michael Carrick's side had just 0.39 expected goals before Bryan Mbeumo's late chance was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. City showed great steel to hold on and win despite the red card.
Elsewhere, Chelsea fans face a tough season. Xabi Alonso's team was bullied at home by newly promoted Hull City, escaping with a lucky draw. Meanwhile, Real Madrid secured a 3-1 home win over Rayo Vallecano. Despite the victory, Jose Mourinho's team faced loud boos from the Bernabeu crowd for their sloppy second half performance.
