Pagan Rejects Ten Million Dollar Option

Cincinnati Reds closer Emilio Pagan has turned down a 10 million dollar player option for 2027. The decision made on Saturday means the 35 year old right handed pitcher will now enter the free agent market.

Pagan had a solid run this year, posting a 5-1 record alongside a 3.38 ERA. He converted 25 saves out of 28 chances while earning a salary of 10 million dollars. His season included a spell on the sidelines from May 5 to July 3 due to a strained left hamstring. Across 10 major league seasons, including his last three with Cincinnati, Pagan has collected 90 career saves.

Reds Decline Option On Suarez

The Reds also decided not to pick up a 16 million dollar mutual option on Eugenio Suarez. The 35 year old third baseman and designated hitter is now heading to free agency as well.

Suarez played under a one year contract that guaranteed him 15 million dollars. He appeared in 125 games for the team, posting a .212 batting average with 26 home runs and 74 RBIs. A strained left oblique kept him out of action from April 22 to May 23. On the international stage, Suarez delivered for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, hitting a tiebreaking RBI double during their 3-2 victory against the United States in the final.

Pierce Johnson Also Set To Leave

Relief pitcher Pierce Johnson is the third veteran heading out. Cincinnati declined an 8 million dollar mutual option on the 35 year old right hander, which triggers a 1 million dollar buyout.

Johnson finished the campaign with a 2-1 record and a 4.65 ERA over 56 relief outings, picking up one save. He dealt with right elbow inflammation that forced him to miss games from May 26 to June 23. His contract had a 5.5 million dollar base salary within a deal guaranteeing 6.5 million dollars, and he earned 300,000 dollars in performance bonuses for games pitched.
