A Special Tribute to Uecker

The Milwaukee Brewers celebrated their first World Series title with a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5. During the postgame celebrations, captain Christian Yelich took time to remember beloved franchise broadcaster Bob Uecker, who passed away in January 2025 at the age of 90.

"Uecky, I love you, man," Yelich said. "We did it."

Overcoming Past Heartache

The triumph provided a stark contrast to a painful exit two years earlier, when Milwaukee blew a lead against the New York Mets in the Wild Card Series. That loss marked the end of the broadcasting career for Uecker, who had quietly battled small cell lung cancer while continuing to call games through the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Yelich and pitcher Brandon Woodruff have endured all the heartache since 2018, experiencing numerous playoff appearances that ended in disappointment before finally reaching the top. Yelich noted that those tough experiences prepared the team for the ultimate victory.

Leadership on and off the Field

Named the first captain in franchise history just last month, Yelich received congratulations from Hall of Fame shortstop Robin Yount on the field. Manager Pat Murphy praised Yelich for constantly believing and speaking the championship goal into existence.

Despite struggling with career lows in his regular season stats, Yelich delivered key contributions in the postseason. He hit an RBI triple in a Game 1 win, drove in runs during the National League Championship Series sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and scored a run in the Game 5 clincher.
