Slow Start for Kansas City Star

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones is going through a difficult start to the season. Through seven games, the 32 year old defender has managed just half a sack and 13 tackles.

Jones has faced similar slow starts in the past two years, but his current numbers are noticeably lower. Over the past two games against the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos, both of which ended in losses, Jones did not record a single tackle, pass deflection, or quarterback hit across 87 snaps.

Facing Extra Pressure from Opponents

Opposing teams are paying close attention to Jones. He has faced the eighth most double teams in the league this season. When teams focus so heavily on him, it opens up space for other players on the defensive line, but his teammates have struggled to win their single matchups.

In the recent game against Denver, Kansas City managed to pressure quarterback Bo Nix on just two of his 34 dropbacks. That 6 percent pressure rate is the lowest by any team in a single game this season. Overall, Kansas City has just nine sacks this year, which places them tied for the fewest in the league alongside the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid noted that Jones is doing everything he can despite drawing constant attention. Reid stated that other defenders must take advantage of those moments to get to the quarterback.

Looking for a Second Half Turnaround

Despite the tough numbers, Jones insists that age is not the reason for his quiet start. He explained that he feels good and remains focused on making the most of his chances when he is not doubled.

There is reason to believe he can bounce back. Last season, Jones played his best football in the final 10 games, recording five sacks during that stretch. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is counting on Jones to find his rhythm again, starting with their upcoming game against the New York Jets.

Jones remains confident in his ability to push through the slump. He mentioned watching interviews of Kobe Bryant about facing storms, adding that he does not waver in his faith, self belief, or work ethic.
