Option Declined For Veteran Pitcher
The Chicago Cubs have chosen to decline their $7.5 million contract option on pitcher Colin Rea for next season. Instead of keeping him on that salary, the club will pay him a $1 million buyout. The decision makes the 35 year old pitcher a free agent.
Rea was a reliable worker for the Cubs over the last two years. He ended up finishing second on the team in total innings pitched in each of those two seasons. During his tenure, he made 46 starts for the club while filling multiple roles on the field.
Shifts In The Rotation And Bullpen
During last season, Rea put together an 8-8 record with a 4.34 ERA while throwing 137 innings. He worked as a starter for part of the year before his job on the squad shifted.
The Cubs acquired starting pitchers Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes at the trade deadline in early August. After those additions, Rea moved out of the starting rotation. He pitched out of the bullpen during the entire second half of the season.
Career History And Pitching Staff Changes
This recent stint was actually the second time Rea pitched for the Cubs. He previously spent time on the mound for the franchise back in 2020. Over his eight year career in the majors, he has posted a 4.40 ERA. His career includes playing stints with San Diego, Miami, and Milwaukee.
With his contract option declined, Rea joins a long list of key pitchers from the Cubs roster who are entering free agency. That group includes Gausman, Holmes, Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, and David Peterson. The Cubs pitching staff faces significant changes as these players enter the open market.
