Massive trade deal for Chicago
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles has made a massive move ahead of the November 10 trade deadline. The Bears acquired first team All Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and a 2028 fifth round draft pick from the Tennessee Titans.
In exchange, Chicago gave up first round picks in 2027 and 2028, plus a 2027 fourth round pick. It is the first time since 1967 that a defensive tackle has been traded for multiple first round draft picks. The Bears sit at 5-2 on the season and face the defending champion Seattle Seahawks next.
What Simmons brings to the defense
Chicago needed help in the middle of their defense. They entered this week ranked 23rd in interior pass rush win rate at 13 percent. While they have the best third down defense in football by allowing a 26.1 percent conversion rate, they have struggled on early downs.
Simmons changes that completely. Since entering the league in 2019, he has recorded 46.5 sacks, which is second among all defensive tackles. This season, he leads all interior defenders in total pressures and run stop impact. He has played 399 snaps so far, proving his ability as a true three down player.
Super Bowl ambitions for the Bears
This move shows Chicago wants to win now while quarterback Caleb Williams is still on his rookie contract. The Bears already boast a top offense that ranks first in rushing, third in overall yards, and eighth in scoring. Darnell Wright recently signed a four year contract worth 116 million dollars as the highest paid right tackle in league history.
Bears coach Ben Johnson explained that management is always talking about improving the roster. He stated that Poles turns over every stone to build a winning group for both the present and the future.
Titans focus on the future
For the Tennessee Titans, the trade marks a complete rebuild. The team holds a 1-6 record and is stocking up on draft capital. Titans coach Robert Saleh previously called Simmons the best defensive tackle in the league, praising his effort on the field.
Tennessee now holds two first round picks in both 2027 and 2028. The franchise will look to build its roster around young talent in the upcoming drafts.
