Scarier moment at Hill Dickinson Stadium

Chelsea keeper Emi Martinez was taken to hospital on Saturday after suffering a head injury during a Premier League match against Everton.

The incident happened in the 67th minute at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Martinez rushed out from his goal to clear an Everton free kick with a punch. During the play, the 34 year old Argentina international collided heavily with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite inside the penalty box.

Both players went down and needed medical treatment on the field. Branthwaite recovered quickly from the blow, but Martinez required extended attention from Chelsea physios as well as paramedics.

Alonso confirms Martinez is conscious

After a long delay, Martinez was taken off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. Young substitute goalkeeper Mike Penders, who is 21 years old, came on to replace him in the 75th minute. Due to the lengthy stoppage, officials added 11 minutes of injury time at the end of the game.

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that Martinez was conscious when leaving the stadium. He stated that the goalkeeper was taken to hospital for precautionary tests.

Chelsea secured all three points on their trip to Merseyside thanks to two goals from Pedro Neto. After the game, Neto dedicated the win to his teammate. He said that the squad was pleased with the result, calling it a shame for Emi and stating that the win was for him.
