Bench decision in Detroit

Charlotte Hornets forward Naz Reid sat out the second half of Wednesday's 97-89 loss to the Detroit Pistons. Head coach Charles Lee made the decision after Reid failed to meet team expectations during his 13 minutes on the court.

Reid started the game and recorded seven points while shooting 2 of 6 from the field. "Unfortunately, [Reid] didn't meet our standards in the first half, and at halftime we made the decision that he wouldn't play in the second half," Lee said. The coach added that he looks forward to Reid meeting those standards in the next game.

How the game slipped away

Charlotte had built a 51-44 lead by halftime. Brandon Miller scored 21 of his 31 points before the break and pulled down 12 rebounds during the game. Neither team shot the ball consistently, but Charlotte held a 6-0 advantage in second-chance points to stay ahead early on.

Detroit responded at the start of the third quarter with a 16-5 run. The Pistons forced eight turnovers in the third quarter to take a 76-70 lead. Charlotte remained close during the fourth quarter, but Miller missed five of his seven shots in the final period. Five more turnovers in the fourth quarter prevented Charlotte from making a comeback.

Background on the Reid deal

Reid was acquired in the trade that sent LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Along with Reid, Charlotte received a 2033 unprotected first round pick and three second round picks in 2029, 2032, and 2033. The Hornets also secured first round pick swaps in 2028, 2029, and 2030.

The 26 year old forward won the 2024 Sixth Man of the Year award. He is currently in the second year of a five year contract worth 125 million dollars that he originally signed with Minnesota.
