Golden State center builds momentum
Golden State Warriors center Charles Bassey is working to secure a steady spot in the lineup after a late start to the current NBA season. Knee tendinitis forced the 26 year old center to miss Golden State's first two games.
He returned on Oct. 24 against Phoenix, scoring 10 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and recording two blocks in a 131-122 defeat. He hit all four of his field goal attempts in just under 13 minutes. In his next game on Oct. 26, a 134-114 victory against Denver, he went scoreless with one rebound as he continues to fight for regular playing time.
From Nigeria to the American hardwood
Born in Nigeria, Bassey originally grew up playing soccer. His life changed when a basketball coach approached him while he was trying to sell chicken.
Bassey admitted he was not interested at first because he loved playing football. He eventually decided to give basketball a try and liked it. That choice led him to the United States to play college basketball at Western Kentucky.
Philadelphia selected him with the 53rd pick in the 2021 NBA draft. Since then, he has spent time with Memphis, Philadelphia, Boston, San Antonio, and G League teams before joining Golden State.
Overcoming repeated physical setbacks
Injuries have followed the center throughout his career. He suffered a tibial plateau fracture in his left leg in December 2019 during his college career.
After joining San Antonio in 2022, a patella fracture ended his season in March 2023. In December of that same year, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Austin Spurs in the G League.
Bassey fought back through the G League last season, averaging 20.5 points and 12.5 rebounds across 20 regular season games for Delaware and Santa Cruz. He was the only qualifying player to average at least 20 points and 12 rebounds. That performance earned him a late season opportunity with Golden State, leading to a one year deal in July.
